BA (philosophy major)/LLB (1st Class Honours), Australian National University

Career

Trevor began his career in the Insurance and Risk team at Clayton Utz in Sydney before moving to the Northern Territory.  He was Associate to Justice Stephen Southwood on the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory before joining the North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency as a criminal barrister/solicitor. 

In 2015, Trevor took the position of General Counsel, and later Crown Counsel, within the NT Solicitor General’s Chambers.

In 2020 Trevor moved to the private bar and joined William Forster Chambers.  He has a general commercial, government and criminal practice with a particular interest in the limits of government power.

Significant cases

Binsaris v Northern Territory of Australia [2020] HCA 24: Led by David McLure SC for the Territory in the High Court in this matter concerned with use of force in a youth detention centre.

Northern Territory of Australia v Mr A Griffiths (deceased) (2019) 364 ALR 208: Led by Sonia Brownhill SC for the Territory in the High Court in this matter concerned with the quantum of compensation payable on the extinguishment or permanent suppression of non-exclusive native title rights and interests.

O’Neill v Roy [2019] NTCA 8: Unled in the Court of Appeal for NT Police in this matter concerned with the scope of the implied licence to knock.

Preston v Avery (2019) 366 ALR 1: Unled in the High Court for the Territory intervening in this matter heard with Clubb v Edwards concerned with the legality of abortion clinic bubble zone laws.

Prior v Mole (2017) 261 CLR 265: Led by Sonia Brownhill SC for NT Police in the High Court in this matter concerned with police ‘protective custody’ powers.

Work Health Authority v Outback Ballooning Pty Ltd (2019) 363 ALR 188: Led by Sonia Brownhill SC for the Work Health Authority in the High Court in this matter concerned with the application of State and Territory workplace safety laws to an aviation accident.
