Jon Tippett QC

Jon Tippett QC is a barrister with Myilly Point Chambers in Darwin, Northern Territory.

Background

Jon commenced practice as a barrister in 1978 at the Victorian Bar. In 1982 he came to the Northern Territory for a “short” stay at the Central Australian Aboriginal Legal Aid Service in Alice Springs. In 1985 he was called to the Bar in Darwin. He practised at William Forster Chambers until 1990 when, together with Steve Southwood QC and John Waters QC, he founded James Muirhead Chambers.

Jon’s practice as a barrister has taken him into a number of jurisdictions. He practised law in Victoria for four years before coming to the Northern Territory. Jon was President of the Northern Territory Criminal Lawyers Association for three years to 1999 and presently holds the position of immediate past president. In 1999 he was elected President of the Law Society Northern Territory.  Jon is the immediate past President of the Northern Territory Bar Association.

His interests include cricket, fast Italian motorcycles and literature.

Area of Law

Jon’s practice is almost evenly divided between the practice of civil and criminal law. In the civil jurisdiction he practices mainly in the areas of medical negligence, professional negligence, tort generally, work health, employment law, insurance and shipping law. He also appears regularly in Coronial inquiries and in other Tribunal and inquiry work. In the criminal jurisdiction Jon is regularly briefed to appear in murder trials, drug trials including large importations and other senior work which takes him before juries in the Supreme Court and into appellate jurisdictions. Jon regularly appears in the NT Court of Criminal Appeal, NT Court of Appeal and NT Supreme Court.
