Jack Karczewski QC

Jack Karczewski QC is the Deputy Director of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in Darwin, Northern Territory.

Background

Jack was first admitted as a solicitor in Queensland on 19 December 1974. He moved to Papua New Guinea in 1975 where he was employed by the PNG Government in the Public Prosecutors Office as a Crown (later State) Prosecutor. In October 1980 Jack became employed by the Port Moresby City Council as its Principal Legal Officer.

Jack moved to the Northern Territory in 1984 to practice criminal law and enjoy a tropical lifestyle. From June 1984 to December 1993 he was employed as Crown Prosecutor with the Prosecutions Division of the NT Department of Law (later ODPP).

From December 1993 to November 1997 Jack was employed as a Policy Law Officer in the Policy Division, NT Attorney General’s Department. He returned to the ODPP in 1997 to take up the position of Assistant Director in Darwin.

Jack was appointed Deputy Director of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions in June 1998.

Jack has been a member of the NT Council of Law Reporting since its inception in 1992. He was elected as special member’s (DPP) representative on the NT Bar Council in March 2000 and has been a member of the Executive Committee of the Criminal Lawyers Association of the Northern Territory since its inception in 1986.

Jack was a council member of the Law Society Northern Territory from 1997-1998. He was a member of the Allocations Committee of the Law Society Public Purposes Trust from June 1997 to June 1999.

He was commissioned as an Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force Specialist Reserve (Legal) on 28 April 1987 and promoted to A/WGCDR rank and appointed to the position of Panel Leader for the 13 SQN Panel with effect from 1 November 1999.
